What is Chufa?

Did you know that chufa is a root vegetable?  Working as a teacher, I often noticed that children are not getting enough nutrition in their diet.  The decision was made to include chufa as an ingredient in our bars because it has a sweet taste that children love and it is non allergenic, making it safe for schools. Our mission is to provide healthy and high quality food to families around the world.  You can feed these bars to your kids, and you would never know they have vegetables inside of them.  Here's what makes our bars amazing:

  • 4 grams of fibre per bar to support proper digestion and gut health.
  • Excellent source of manganese, a mineral that assists with bone strength and energy.
  • Good source of magnesium, which supports strong muscles and a healthy heart.
  • Source of iron, an essential mineral for energy and brain health. Iron is the most common nutrient deficiency globally.
  • Only 7 grams of sugar. We use low-medium glycemic sweeteners to make our products safe for children and diabetics.

The ancient Egyptians used chufa as a baking ingredient and as part of their regular diet, dating as far back as 6000 years ago.  Ancient hieroglyphics show Egyptians using it to make cakes, with dates or honey being used as a sweetener.  Chufa has a sweet taste that blends well with our Canadian-grown ingredients like hemp seeds, maple syrup, flax, and oats. Amazingly, archaeologists have found chufa inside of the tombs of Pharaohs.
